My Ribs Heave, Variations on Being
In her first solo exhibition titled My Ribs Heave, Variations on Being, Ekin Kano invites us to an uncanny zone, offering us an excursion along the borders of the human and non-human. Works in this exhibition incorporate human-subjects, occupied with their own body and individuality, into various forms that signal towards macro- and micro-universes, in order to investigate the means of transforming into something else.
“Surprise elements” indicating life in the Anthropocene drive us to confront the transformation taking place beyond our vision, at the cellular level, and first and foremost in our own body. Working with one eye displaying meticulous skills of observation, and the other yielding to the abundance of not-knowing-yet, Ekin Kano, in her exhibition composed of ambiguous bodies, both living and inert, produced with inspiration from uncontrollably multiplying cells; brings process, possibilities and methodology to the forefront in loyalty to the ongoing.
"The details of her works produce images, thoughts and effects multiplying out of our control and forcing us out of our comfort zones, promising to throw our anthropocentric system into crisis. Ekin Kano seeks to stay with the crisis, heralding a model of evolution where we heal along with other species and bodies.”
